How to prepare answers for train driver criteria based interview

So you have been invited for the trainee train driver manager interview! Well done for getting to this stage. The techniques I share here can be used to structure your answers to the trainee train driver manager interview. Infact you can use it for any criteria based interview.

First you need to think about the skills and qualities required as advertised in the job advert. And then write two examples on how you have demonstrated each skill. That is you are providing evidence that you have done the walk and can talk about it.

Read the Job Description and Person Specification two times. During the second time underline the skills and qualities required.

Giving Evidence Of Your Experiences: Train Driver Manager Interview

Write the underlined skills down. Now use when, where, what, who, whom, how to construct a meaningful scenario.  Doing this will help you remember your story vividly and generate a context, any action you took and what the results were. Now write your context down.

Context

This where, when and how the situation or your experience for a skill started. Example of context: In my previous role as a customer service assistant at Virgin Trains, I was approached by an irate customer. He was not happy as the train he has been waiting for was being delayed for 5 mins.

Action

Now think on what you did. Was it intentional or did it occurred to you naturally to do it that way? Were you aware of the cause and effect of your actions? Write your actions down. Example of action will be: I listened to the customer’s query and identified the source of his anger by paraphrasing his statements to him. I then went on to explain what I can do for him and apologise for the inconvenience our services has caused him.

Results

Then think of the results. Remember this is what you get paid to achieve. You are not paid for your actions. Write them in terms of the benefits of your actions. Express them qualitatively and quantitatively. Examples of results: staff turnover and absenteeism was decreased; Productivity increased by 20%; Revenue went up twice in the first six months, given that we were in a recession; customer wrote a thank you letter; customer was happy thereby reducing complains rating by 1%; compliance levels increased by 3%; I achieved KPI.
