Hi there I recently applied for role of trainee train driver at Freightliner.
I passed the sjt test but failed on the visual test.
I now have to wait 6 months to re-apply.
I live in Ipswich and just wondered can I apply for other train companies or do I have to wait until the 6 months has passed?

      Hi Will,
Yow will have to wait for six months to be through the selection process again if any TOC you apply to use visual test for selection.
If they don’t use Visual Test in their selection process, you can apply and and will not have to wait for six months.

hello, what exactly do you need, to get into this field of work, and what qualifications, i currently work as a receptionist, but plan on a change in a few years time, i’m a mum so i’m waiting till my child starts full time education, shes nearly 3, then i really want to push ahead with becoming a train driver, ideally fright trains, i wouldn’t mind the long hours of work, the work i currently do leaves me with time to spare and my boss is selling the company in 3 years time so, i have the time to get practicing with my new future job

      Hi Corrina
To become a train driver you will have to apply for a trainee position first. The training usually takes 9-12 months depending on the route you will be driving on. The training can only be provided by s Train Operating Company (TOC). TOCs employ people and train them to become train drivers for their trains. So to get in to this field of work you will need to visit the websites of TOCs or google search them apply for train driver trainee job vacancies.

If your application is successful, the TOC will invite you for a series of psychometric assessments and interviews. If you pass all of them they will offer you the position of trainee train driver where they you train you to become a qualified train driver.

With freight driving you may not go home everyday as you will driver the goods from one point to another, and some times it is not practical to return the same day but to sleep overnight in hotel. Where as passenger train drivers go home everyday after their shift.
