Fault Identification Tests are used to assess your ability to locate and report defects on a train. This is an aptitude you will need when communicating to train engineer when you train becomes faulty. You should receive a practice booklet from the TOC or the assessment centre that will be assessing you. Bear in mind in that the practice material is always different from the real assessment. The practice material are normally level 1 and 2 problems where as the real stuff is normally level 3 and 4. Remember to do loads of practice for they will make you good at this assessment not perfect. Work through the questions quickly and precisely . Always read the instructions and be sure of them. Ask the examiner if you don’t understand the instructions. This because they are not usually allowed to explain anything once the actual test has started .

You may not finish but as long as you work quickly and accurately you should be fine. Most people pass this one anyway. If you feel that you haven’t had enough practice on the material you received from the TOCs tell the invigilator or assessor and they may document it. If you do this they will not under normal circumstances let you take the test.

Practise the material the TOC sends over and over while speeding the time you use in completing the exercises. Doing so will speed you up.

I wish you all the best in the tests. And please don’t forget to leave us a comment below.
