Trainee Train Driver assessment day can be a bit hectic. This is especially so when you have to do more than 3 train driver selection tests on that day. Some Train Operating Companies (TOCs) will let you do 2 of the driver selection tests on the first day. And the remaining on another day if you are successful on the first day.

However you will be better off if you put the guidelines and tips we recommend here into practice. In fact these tips will be useful in any job related assessment.

Tips, Strategies and Info for passing on the Train Driver Assessments

  • Find out where and how many trainee train driver tests you will be taking on that day from the assessment centre or TOC.
  • Arrive early at the assessment centre – 30 minutes before the test if possible. On the railway it is better to be safe than sorry.
  • Prepare by practicing any sample materials they send you carefully. Don’t get tired or bored here. Do it over, and over and several overs.
  • On the assessment day listen carefully to the instructions and tackle what is in front of you accurately and timely. Bear in mind it may differ from the practice materials.
  • Be confident of your abilities and please don’t watch any other candidate. This can be very disruptive to your concentration.  So consider this when choosing a seat. A good seating area on the front row is usually helpful.
  • Be conversant with the job description and person specification. Think on the keywords and how you can demonstrate it or have demonstrated it.
  • Be professional and look professional. Wear formal office apparel such as suit and tie. And of course that goes without saying ladies should also put on their office attire.
  • Have a reasonable meal on the day, hydrate your neurons by drinking water, and ease the pressure on your kidneys equally. Once the assessment is started you may not be allowed to attend the bathroom.
  • If you are not feeling well during any part of the assessment at any point in time tell the administrator. If they insist that you must complete it before leaving the room, ask them to take note or document requests. This might be helpful if you want to challenge an unsuccessful report or results.
